Like a driver’s license, your license for cosmetology may need to be renewed. Currently in the United States, the average renewal is every two years. Fortunately, unlike your driver’s license the cosmetology licensing process relatively simple and painless. There are no long lines, no practical or written examination, and no photographs showing unflattering skin on a bad hair day. Most state licensing offices have made it even easier by offering license renewal online.
There are a few things you should keep in mind to make this process go smoothly:
1.Remember to update your home address with your state licensing board each time you move. Otherwise, you may well miss out on important information such as updates and changes to state regulations as well as your license renewal reminder. Also, if you move out of state, you’ll need to transfer your license and make sure that you are in compliance with the cosmetology regulations in your new state.
2.Some states, including Texas, Ohio, Kentucky, Florida, Georgia, Nebraska, North Carolina and Illinois require you to present proof of your continuing education hours (CEU) at the time of licensing renewal. If you are renewing on-line in one of these states, you may be required to send proof of CEU completion by mail before your license will be updated.
3. Don’t wait until the last minute to update your license. Often, licensing boards experience a rush of renewals at the end of the month and getting your new license out to you will take longer, which may become problematic.
4.Don’t work with an expired license. Continuing to work with an expired license is not just illegal, it’s also not smart. In some states, you can let your license lapse for up to five years if you are not practicing, but the accrued late fees that you’ll eventually need to pay for renewal are often hefty.
Overall, keeping your license current is simple and pragmatic. It allows you to focus on your work and the daily challenge of making the world a more beautiful place.
